This Friday, August 15 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of Japan and Evesham & District Branch Royal British Legion is holding a service at the war memorial in Abbey Park.
While VE Day (Victory in Europe) marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of Armed Forces personnel were still engaged in fighting in the Far East.
VJ Day marks the day Japan surrendered, on 15 August 1945, bringing the Second World War to a final close and will be marked nationally by a two-minute silence held at 12 noon.
A service at the National Memorial Arboretum will be attended by Their Majesties The King and Queen.
Meanwhile, the anniversary will be marked in Evesham with a service which will include a wreath laying ceremony at 10.45am.
It will be led by Revd Andy Green, and readers will be Evesham & District RBL chair Phillip Rowne-Speed, mayor of Evesham, Councillor John Clatworth and Worcestershire’s deputy lord lieutenant.
There will be refreshments following the service at the Old School Cafe, Merstow Green.
Arrive at 10.30am for a 10.45am start. All are welcome.
