Evesham Regatta brings sporting spectacle to the Avon

EVESHAM Regatta made a welcome return over the May bank holiday weekend with plenty of sunshine, the odd shower and spirited racing creating a lively atmosphere along the banks of the River Avon.

Across two days of competition, a total of 29 clubs featuring 400+ rowers from across the region fought it out in 263 races.

Clubs who travelled from as far afield as Nottingham, Monmouth and Shrewsbury, vied alongside a strong local and regional presence, highlighting Evesham’s strong pull as one of the region’s best-loved events.

On the water, the Evesham Rowing Club enjoyed a successful weekend with nine wins on Saturday, ahead of Magdalen College and Warwick Boat Clubs, who secured six victories each.

Racing continued at pace on Sunday, with Evesham topping the standings once again with 16 wins – Gloucester Rowing Club finishing second with five.

With competitors ranging from 12-year-old juniors racing in their first regatta through to masters crews aged more than 80, the weekend showcased the inclusive nature of the sport.

Beyond the racing, the regatta once again reflected the strong sense of community at the club, with its army of volunteers supporting every aspect of the regatta.

From race control and marshalling to catering, baking cakes and logistics, members of the club helped to create a welcoming atmosphere and smoothly run event for competitors, spectators and local residents alike.

Evesham Rowing Club chairman, Simon Edwards, said,  “Evesham Regatta is a special weekend for us, and this year really delivered. The racing was competitive, the atmosphere along the river was fantastic, and it was great to see so many crews enjoying what Evesham has to offer.

“To have that mix of first-time juniors alongside experienced crews cheered on along the banks by supporters, spectators and visitors passing through the town is exactly what we want.

“It shows the strength of the sport and the role this regatta plays in bringing people together.”

He added: “An event like this takes a huge amount of effort behind the scenes. Our volunteers, umpires, sponsors and supporters make it happen, and we’re incredibly grateful for the time and energy they give. Thank you.

“There’s a real sense of pride in what’s been achieved this weekend. The regatta, and our club, continues to grow, and we’re focused on keeping that momentum building to put Evesham firmly on the rowing map.”
