Lets celebrate Evesham says town's MP as Visa competition launched

Evesham Editorial 23rd Jan, 2024   0

EVESHAM’S MP has lent his support to a competition which could net the Vale £15,000 towards a community project and a package of support for town businesses.

Nigel Huddleston spoke after Visa and the British Retail Consortium announced the ‘Let’s Celebrate Towns’ competition for 2024.

The nationwide showcase recognises towns which are helping local businesses and communities to thrive.

Last year saw investment in a range of projects including historical tourism in Annan in Scotland and cultural events in Pontypridd in Wales.

Therefore, the 2024 edition provides an array of new opportunities for celebrating ideas from towns all over the UK.

Mr Huddleston, MP for Mid Worcestershire, said:

“There are many excellent towns within my constituency, and it’s time we shine a spotlight on the fantastic work they are doing on the whole.”

“I strongly encourage interested parties to submit their applications. I would also love to hear from you about the local projects you think should be recognised.

Applications are open in four categories Visa’s ‘Towns Vitality Roadmap’ says are integral to supporting the economic growth of towns namely:

Business environment, people and skills, infrastructure, and sustainability.

Mandy Lamb, managing director, UK & Ireland, Visa, said:

“With the return of ‘Let’s Celebrate Towns’ for 2024, we encourage towns to step forward and share their stories.

“Showcase not only what makes them unique but also how they are adapting to new challenges and taking advantage of untapped growth opportunities.”

Helen Dickinson, CEO, British Retail Consortium, added:

“Following its success in 2023, and the valuable insights gained from different towns across the country, I look forward to hearing more examples of how areas are helping to support high streets and communities, and where best practice can be spread more widely across the country.”

Lorna Robinson from Worcestershire, a winner of the Champion Award for England, said:

“Since winning this award, we have formed an independent business group to help spotlight our town and its thriving food scene.

“This is the first time businesses have come together to discuss the high street and collaborate on unlocking its potential.”

Towns can get involved by encouraging local authorities and community groups to apply.

By entering, towns have the chance of attending a national awards ceremony. In addition Evesham could be one of eight towns recognised for their work and achievements.

A panel of independent judges will select towns and award them £15,000 towards a community scheme. Additionally, the selected towns will receive a package of support for local businesses.

Entries close on February 18. Visit www.visa.co.uk/campaign/talk-of-the-town/lets-celebrate-towns for more.
