Evesham mum to run London Marathon to raise fund for SEN holiday clubs minibus

AN EVESHAM mum is running this year’s London Marathon in a bid to raise £2,000 to pay for a minibus to get children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to holiday clubs.

And Rebecca Williams has vowed – if she hits her target before the race – she will take on the 26.2mile course in the capital on April 27 whilst dressed as a bus.

Rebecca’s son Max has a learning disability and autism. He and a number of other SEN children were all together in the same reception class at school but, after that for subsequent years, they were all sent to different schools, based on their abilities.

Now, the only times Rebecca and Max and the other children and parents get to meet up are during the holiday clubs which offer a much-needed chance to relax in familiar company and a variety of activities .

Among them are trips to the swimming pool for splash sessions, seeing films at the cinema and visits to farm parks.

The holiday clubs also offer accessible bikes, SEN sports, soft play, dancing, craft activities, sensory play and more.

The siblings of the SEN children also get to play with fellow SEN siblings and the families who attend offer help and support to each other.

Because of the nature of the educational needs, accessibility is key and the minibus would help ensure the holiday club attendees can get to the venues for their activities.

Rebecca said: “Training has been so hard over the winter – with the frost and dark nights, I have been doing most of my running on the treadmill.

“Everyone I have spoken to has been great at sharing the fundraising page and getting the message out there.”

Rebecca’s fundraising page is up to almost £1,350 so far.

Rebecca added: “Thank you everyone so much for your support, it means the world to all of the SEN families.”
