A YOUNG maths talent from Evesham has been named one of the winners of an international maths competition for the second time in a row.

Jerion Jorel Castro, who is 12-years-old and attends Vale of Evesham School was proclaimed the level 8 winner of the British Youth International College (BYITC) International Maths Olympiad.

Last year he was crowned the level 7 winner.

The eight‑day online competition, held on March 19 to 26, drew thousands of young entrants from around the world with the winners announced on World Maths Day (March 26).

The challenge was open to students aged four to fourteen and was free to enter.

Jerion’s mum, Cecile Castro, said: “We are very proud of our son’s accomplishment.

“His teacher’s dedication and the engaging learning environment at BYITC have helped him grow. It’s a great platform to build skill and confidence.”

The Olympiad is based on BYITC’s pioneering Abacus Maths programme, requiring students to complete 50 questions within one hour, with scoring driven by accuracy and timing.

Competitors log into BYITC’s secure platform and complete level‑appropriate tests under live invigilation applying abacus, finger, and mental arithmetic theory throughout the exam.

Top scorers across eleven levels of BYITC’s Supermaths training receive certificates and prizes in recognition of their outstanding numerical and problem‑solving abilities.

Dr Rashmi Mantri, founder of BYITC, said: “Congratulations to all our remarkable winners. Every child who took part showed commitment, discipline, and a real passion for learning.

“This year’s 20 per cent increase in entries shows just how strongly young people across the world are engaging with numeracy, particularly as technology and AI continue to shape their futures.

“Our Olympiad aligns perfectly with World Maths Day, reminding us that maths is a universal language that connects us all.

“Youngsters thrive when they are challenged, and competitions like this help develop resilience, problem‑solving skills, focus, and confidence – abilities that will benefit them throughout life.

“We are incredibly proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by every participant.”

Glasgow‑based BYITC is now the UK’s largest provider of abacus maths classes and the creator of the world’s first game based on an abacus maths application.
