AN OFFENHAM man has rowed more than 500,000 metres to mark the 40th anniversary of his employer as well as raising funds for a charity that support’s people living with Tourettes.
Rich Evans, who works for Offenham-based seed producers Enza Zaden UK, decided to take on the gruelling challenge which roughly equates to the distance between it and the company’s head office in Enkhuizen, Netherlands – 306 miles.
In addition, Richard, who has been a keen member of Evesham Rowing Club since childhood, decided to achieve it in 40 days whilst generating cash for Tourettes Action, a charity close to his heart.

Richard’s son Stefan lives with Tourette’s syndrome and faces daily struggles with the neurological condition which can cause involuntary sounds and movements known as tics.
“Stefan continues to hold down a job with the incredible support of Heart of England Forest and this challenge was a way to raise awareness and support for the Tourette’s community, which is often overlooked.”
“Tourette’s syndrome can often be misunderstood, leading to stigma and isolation for those who live with it. By participating in this challenge, I’m advocating for greater understanding and support for those impacted by this condition,” Rich said.
Despite illness during the second week impacting his schedule for several days, Rich kept on course and smashed his goal with two daily sessions, completing the feat in 34 days on February 20 – his 56th birthday.
Naturally, Rich completed his challenge at Evesham Rowing Club, a place which has been like a second home to him since becoming in 1978.
The challenge also pushed his body to the limits as in 2007 Rich was involved in a rowing accident that led to five years of recovery including five leg operations before was able to walk (and row) properly again.

After completing his challenge Rich added: “The overwhelming support from colleagues, friends, family, and Evesham Rowing Club members really filled my heart and made the accomplishment all the more special.
“I would like to thank everyone who supported me through this challenge, whether monetarily or motivationally. Their generosity and encouragement really helped me push through some really difficult moments. I am so pleased that together we have raised money for such an important cause.”
So far, Rich has raised £2,275 for the charity which helps to improve the lives of people living with Tourette’s Syndrome.
