AN EVESHAM mobile fish and chip van is a catch above the rest and could be crowned the best in the UK after being revealed as a finalist at the 2018 National Fish & Chip Awards.

StarChip Enterprise is one of three firms shortlisted in the Best Mobile Fish and Chip Operator category at the awards known as the ‘Oscars’ of the fish and chip world.

To get to this stage and secure a place in the coveted shortlist, StarChip Enterprise has been judged across a wide range of criteria, including sustainable sourcing policies, staff training processes and marketing activities.

Over the coming weeks the three finalists will face further judging in the form of mystery dining inspections before the winner is announced at the prestigious awards ceremony in London in January next year.

Jeffrey Warren, owner of StarChip Enterprise, said: “It is brilliant news. The staff really do put a lot of hard work in.

“I think they’ve recognised us for the fact we make sure we source fish sustainably and we make sure our staff know where the fish is from.

“We also go out every night to serve the surrounding villages and to reach elderly people who may not otherwise be able to get fish and chips.”

Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive of Seafish which organises the awards, said: “We’re seeing a new generation of mobile fish and chip units pop-up around the country, with so many people using them for events and less traditionally, for weddings.

“The public love fish and chips so it’s no surprise that fish and chip vans are one of the most popular mobile catering options – the dish is our nation’s favourite takeaway after all.

“Running a successful mobile business is no easy feat, and requires a great deal of commitment and passion in order to succeed, but all of our finalists hit the mark perfectly. Congratulations to them all.”

Award sponsor Colin Heathfield, Head of Foodservice and International Sales at Pukka Pies Limited, said: “Mobile fish and chip shops are classically British and this year’s finalists reflect the creativity and innovation of this fine tradition.

“At Pukka we pride ourselves on offering good quality, hearty food to our hungry customers, and the businesses shortlisted really share those values. We wish them all our warmest congratulations and all the best for the final.”
