Evesham bat carers in flight cage appeal

EVESHAM Bat Care has launched an appeal to raise hundreds of pounds in order to build a flight cage to help rehabilitate the injured animals.

The group, which doesn’t receive any funding and is staffed entirely by volunteers, has already raised more than £300 for the cage which will be essential in helping to teach young bats how to fly and hunt.

Originally volunteers set a goal of raising £250, but have now moved the target to £400 which would then allow the group to also buy spare bulbs for the special lights, thicker insulation for the shed and more heat pads and equipment.

For the past three years the group has set aside any money possible to complete the ground works ready for the cage, and just a couple of weeks ago a retiring bat carer donated a flight cage.

However, more money needs to be raised to carry out repairs to the cage before it can be used, including wood preservative, replacement of rotten bits of wood, screws and staples to hold the structure together and brackets to hold shelving and storage to the walls.

Michelle Young from Evesham Bat Care said: “The flight cage is essential for any bats that are brought into care.

“Before any bat is released their flying ability needs to be tested in a safe environment. Any youngsters also need to learn to fly and hunt and use their echolocation.

“A flight cage enables insects to be in the same environment as these young bats where they can learn skills they would normally learn in the wild with other members of their roost.”
