Evesham and Pershore schools chosen to lead campaign to get girls and women active

SCHOOLS in Evesham and Pershore are among those championing the Worcestershire Girls Can campaign.

The De Montfort School and Bowbrook House School are two of eight lead schools on the scheme designed to get women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size or ability.

Now in its fourth year, Worcs Girls Can is delivered by the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Working with lead schools the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire will transform girls’ PE and sport from March 4 to 10, 2019.

Activities such as yoga, boxfit and clubbercise will introduce girls to the breadth of extra-curricular physical activity opportunities in their local area, helping to encourage lifelong participation.

Findings from previous campaigns revealed that 21 per cent of girls in Worcestershire schools were inactive.

Of those surveyed, more than a third said they felt insecure hated other people watching them and were self-conscious about their bodies.

Almost two thirds said they disliked competitive PE lessons.

Beky Williams, the Sports Partnership’s head of participation, said: “Through the Worcs Girls Can campaign we want to help schools, and particularly PE departments, address this issue.

“In 2019, the focus will be to reduce this statistic and to promote the positive impact that sport can have on mental health and wellbeing.”

Leisure providers, sports organisations and physical activity instructors are among those supporting the drive and during the campaign week, women and girls across Worcestershire will have the be offered free sports and activity sessions within their local areas.

The partnership is urging sporting organisations across Worcestershire to get on board with the campaign and help widen the amount of physical activity on offer for girl and women.
