MUSIC lovers have been invited to this year’s Wychavon Festival of Brass which kicks off with a free gala concert before the competition begins in earnest.

The much-loved celebration of brass band music will mark its 30th birthday with a bumper entry list of competitors from across the UK and for the first time from Europe

Bands from Norway and Germany will be making music at the free concert at The De Montfort School tomorrow (Friday) from 7pm.

This is the first time such a concert has been planned with residents having the chance to see some very special bands.

Manger Old Stars from Norway and the European Challenge Cup winners Brass Band Regensburg will be among those taking to the stage.

Avonbank Brass Band and Bretforton Silver Band offer some local flavour in support of Wychavon’s foreign guests.

Brass Band Regensburg and Manger also feature in the competition itself to be held on Saturday (November 2).

The Wychavon Festival of Brass is a brass competition of national importance and the event is held each year at The De Montfort School.

2019 will feature bands from Cornwall to Kent, Scotland and Wales all travelling to Evesham to experience the contest.

Four performance halls are in operation as different levels of competition are held throughout the day. It starts at 9am, concluding some 12 hours later.

The competition between bands at whatever level is ferocious and keen attention is paid by bandsmen and women to each other’s performances. Judgements are made by top players and conductors and prizes awarded to the best performing bands and soloists.
