INTERNATIONAL footballer Jamie Clarke is the star guest at a health and well-being event in Pershore next month.

Professional model Jamie, who is captain and star striker of England’s men’s deaf football team, continues to lend his support to a district council campaign to highlight the importance of issues affecting the Deaf community.

Wychavon-born Jamie, who is profoundly deaf, has become a leading advocate for disability awareness in sport, having had to navigate the challenges of the hearing world and discrimination.

“We know there can be many barriers for deaf people, and accessing health and wellbeing services can be especially challenging, whether it’s visiting a GP, going to a leisure centre, or seeking support.

“In Wychavon, organisations like the council, GP surgeries, and charities such as Sensory Matters are working together to better understand and meet the Deaf community’s needs.

“They are here to listen and help make experiences with local services better, so come along and help us shape services that truly support your health and well-being.”

Jamie will be sharing his inspiring journey and will be available to answer questions while encouraging visitors to engage with services present on the day, which will be supported by BSL interpreters.

A range of services and organisations attending include GP practices, a health van offering checks, and Hearing Link and Sensory Matters, which will be showcasing equipment and support for hearing loss.

Councillor Dan Birch, Wychavon’s executive member for leisure, health and wellbeing, said: “Research nationally has shown that Deaf people have poorer access to health services and health information and events such as these are aimed at redressing this.

“Everyone is welcome to attend, whether you’re deaf, hard of hearing, a family member, carer, or simply interested in learning more, come along and tap into the health and wellbeing support available in your community.”

The event takes place Monday, September 15, from 10.30am to 2pm in the committee rooms and council chamber at Wychavon’s Civic Offices, at Queen Elizabeth Drive, WR10 1PT.
