Driven to tackle fears for good cause

CARING friends from Pershore are set to conquer their fears behind the wheel when they tackle a gruelling charity rally throughout Europe.

Kim Marshall and Hayley Reynolds will be setting off in their van later this month for the five-day Screwball Rally challenge in aid of the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society.

The pair, who aim to raise around £2,000 for the cause, begin the challenge on Thursday, September 25 and will travel more than 1,800 miles driving through cities in Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and France.

But the challenge will see the pair tackle their fears with Kim nervous about driving abroad and on the other side of the road and Hayley who has been fearful of driving for quite some time.

Kim, who earlier this year helped organise an Hollistic Fayre in Pershore, told the Observer: “We can’t wait to start – the nerves have kicked in a little bit but we are mainly excited about what lies ahead of us.

“This will be a big thing for both of us to do.

“Whilst I am a confident driver I have never driven abroad before and am really worried about driving on the other side of the road as it seems totally alien to me. And I’m really not good with lefts and rights anyway.

“And with Hayley not driving a car in years we’ve decided to ‘Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway’ as the book goes and raise money for a great cause along the way.

“It’s going to be tiring so working as a team will be very important. I’m scared of heights and my worse fear is that we get lost and somehow approach the edge of a mountain cliff with not much of a barrier.”

Hayley’s husband Dean suffers from MS which is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord resulting in loss of muscle control, vision, balance, and sensation.

Kim added money raised will help pay for research to help combat the disease and help sufferers in and around the UK.

“We just want to raise as much money as we can – that’s the main reason why we are doing this.

“The support we’ve had so far has been overwhelming and it’s surprised me how generous people have been.”

The pair have already raised more than £1,000 and offering businesses and organisations the chance to have their logo on the van which they travel in.
