Drive launched to get motorists to slow down

Rob George 21st Jan, 2020

DRIVERS are being urged to slow down as West Mercia Police joins other forces up and down the country for the latest national speed enforcement campaign.

The drive, which runs until February 2, is being co-ordinated by the NPCC (National Police Chiefs’ Council) to improve road safety and law enforcement.

Motorists are encouraged to think about their speed and reminded to always stay within the limit because the faster they go, the bigger chance they have of crashing and the more devastating the consequences of a collision.

In the past three years across the West Mercia Police force area 131 people have been killed and 933 seriously injured in crashes where speeding or the use of inappropriate speed for the conditions has been recorded as a contributory factor.

Throughout the campaign West Mercia Police Road Safety team, police officers, PCSOs, special constables and community speed watch volunteers will be out and about in local communities taking part in a mixture of enforcement and educational operations.

Supt Mel Crowther from West Mercia Police said: “Supporting this national campaign with local activities and increased enforcement is an important way of raising the issue and highlighting the dangers of speeding.”

She added there were too many people in local communities whose lives were affected by people speeding and families which knew far too well the devastating consequences speeding and subsequent crashes could have.

The minimum penalty is a £100 fine and three penalty points. Drivers are disqualified if they reach 12 points within three years.

Points can also impact on motorists’ insurance premiums.
