Derek and NHS reach 75 not out with Evesham Community Hospital celebration

AN EVESHAM man who was born on the day the NHS was founded was among the guests at a celebration held at the town’s community hospital.

Derek Bedford marked his and the NHS’s 75th birthday on Wednesday (July 5) and was joined by wife Cathy who worked at Evesham Community Hospital for 45 years.

After cutting the cake, the couple were presented with flowers to mark the special occasion.

After converting from a workhouse in 1938, the hospital has been serving its community for 85 years. Most recently, the hospital has become the centre for stroke rehabilitation services across the whole county.

Dan Marshall, the hospital’s matron, said the National Health Service was a ‘great institution to work for’.

“I certainly wouldn’t work for any other organisation.

“I’ve worked for the NHS for the last 26 years.”

The birthday celebrations continue this week across the trust, with more events taking place in community hospitals and inpatient services.
