Dementia action group’s work gets an award boost

EVESHAM Dementia Action Alliance has received recognition from the Alzheimer’s Society for their work to make the town more dementia friendly.

The group launched their campaign back in March to make Evesham a dementia friendly town and since then community groups, businesses, residents and local councils have joined forces to make it a reality.

In an important step in achieving the campaign’s goal, the Alzheimer’s Society has officially awarded the group the title of ‘Working towards becoming Dementia Friendly.’

To be given the title, the Evesham Dementia Action Alliance had to show evidence of their dementia work and the effect it has had on the local community.

The group also had to put together an action plan for the next 12 months, driven by the priorities identified by residents living with dementia, as well as key areas defined by the British Standard Code of Practice for Dementia Friendly Communities, including arts, culture, leisure, businesses and shops, community, voluntary, faith groups and organisations.

Gill Read, Services Manager for Alzheimer’s Society, said: “Thank you to these three communities who have worked so hard to gain recognition as working towards becoming dementia friendly.

“This will make a huge difference to ensuring every single person living with dementia is understood, respected and supported, and confident they can contribute to community life.”
