Deco the giraffe has designs on being showroom hit for hospice

AN EVESHAM business has welcomed a special guest to its showroom and headquarters as part of its sponsorship of the ‘Worcester Stands Tall’ public art trail organised by St Richard’s Hospice.

Made from fibreglass, the eight-foot giraffe named Deco, has been pained in the Karndean showroom, allowing visitors an exclusive first glimpse of the artist at work prior to the big reveal and public art event going live in the summer from July 9 to September 16.

Artist Susan Webber will spend more than 186 hours sketching, painting and lacquering Deco the giraffe, as well as showcasing subtle shapes and colours from Karndean’s geometric Kaleidoscope collection as part of the final design.

“Despite being advised to get a ‘sensible’ job after school, I have always loved design and decided to go back to art school in my thirties to study illustration. I have opted for a bold pattern for Deco the giraffe and I’m really looking forward to bringing him to life, as well as sharing snippets of the process with Karndean and their visitors,” she said.

Jessica Rollinson, showroom manager at Karndean Designflooring, said: “Having an eight-foot tall giraffe in the showroom is a first for Karndean and we’re thrilled to be able to work so closely with Susan for this exciting project.

“We know visitors are going to love this opportunity to see the design unfold and it will also mean more people become aware of why we’re all doing this – to raise vital funds for St Richard’s Hospice.”

In a bid to raise funds for the St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal, Worcester Stands Tall will see a trail of sponsored giraffes pop up all around the city, decorated with an assortment of designs inspired by various themes.

The giraffes will then go up for auction in October to raise further funds for the appeal, which aims to raise the final £1.4million needed to build a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire.

The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, is £5.3million.

“We’re looking to build a bigger hospice that can better support our current patients and meet the unmet needs of thousands of local people in the future,” said Sara Matthews, Worcester Stands Tall project manager.
