THE ONGOING saga over the future of Worcester Warriors could be resolved today following a pledge by co-owner Jason Whittingham.
In a statement before Sunday’s emotional 21-36 reverse at the hands of Sixways, Whittingham said he and Colin Goldring were at the ‘final stages’ of the heads of terms of a sale and hoped to make an announcement ‘in the next 48 hours’.
Any sale appears to involved the continued involvement of the pair at least in the short-term as Whittingham stated the ‘buyer’ has asked them to remain on in ‘support and transition’.
Notably, a commitment has only been made to ‘rugby at Sixways’ by the new buyer, not to keep Worcester Warriors at Sixways.
Whittingham also said:
- The buyer has confirmed their willingness to inject funds to pay the salaries owed for August and ‘ensure all September commitments are also met on time.’
- This week’s games will depend ‘largely on the strength of our actions in the coming days’.
- How ‘so much misinformation’ was down to their lack of updates leaving people to ‘fill the void with rumour and speculation’.
- Director of Rugby Steve Diamond is being kept informed ‘in so much as we were able to’.
- While the statement from the staff on Friday was ‘a breach of contractual obligations’ the owners are not looking to ‘point fingers or sack anyone’ and no-one has been ‘threatened with the sack’ to his knowledge.
