County Tories react after Liz Truss named new party leader and next PM

LIZ Truss will become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after being declared the winner of the Conservative Party leadership contest.

The 47-year-old will become the third female Prime Minister after securing 57 per cent of the votes of Conservative Party members with 43 per cent voting for former Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

A total of 82.6 per cent of party members voted in the election for a new leader for the party with Ms Truss gaining 81,326 votes and Mr Sunak 60,399.

She will travel to Balmoral tomorrow (Tuesday) along with current Prime Minister Boris Johnson for an audience with Her Majesty the Queen who will ask her to form a Government and become the country’s 56th Prime Minister.




Political figures across the county have taken to social media with their reaction to the news.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin said: “I pay tribute to two fine candidates in Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak for putting forward their vision to our members and congratulate Liz Truss on becoming the third female Prime Minister in our nation’s history.


Worcester City Council’s Conservative leader Coun Marc Bayliss said: “Congratulations to Liz Truss on becoming leader and our next Prime Minister. Britain’s third female PM – all Conservative.

While Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston said: “Congratulations to Liz Truss, the new leader of the Conservative Party and our new Prime Minister.

“It will be immediately on to business, delivering for our country.”
