TRIBUTES have been paid to Battle of Worcester Society chairman and former West Mercia Police Chief Inspector Richard Shaw who has died at the age of 76.
Richard was chairman of the society for a number of years and was a very popular figure in Worcester and beyond.
He frequently gave talks on two of his favourite subjects, the Battle of Worcester itself and the Napoleonic wars.
Members hailed his major contribution to the Battle of Worcester Society with his extensive knowledge and cracking sense of humour.
Richard’s other passion was cricket and he was also chairman of the Worcestershire Cricket Society.
He was a lifelong Worcestershire Cricket and West Bromwich Albion supporter.
A passion for history followed a distinguished career as a police officer in West Mercia Police, where he met his wife Christine. He retired in 1997 as Chief Inspector.
He then spent 11 years working as a civilian claims investigator for the force.
Vice Chairman of the Battle of Worcester Society, Daniel Daniels, said: “The whole Society is deeply saddened by the death of Richard. He was a great friend and a true Gentleman and will be a great loss to the Society. The Society sends its deepest sympathies and condolences to the family.”
As a mark of respect, this weeks Annual General Meeting of the Society has been postponed.
