THE County Council has presented the first of its Plastic Pledge certificates to a local business.
The Plastic Pledge scheme was introduced by Worcestershire County Council to recognise local businesses and people within their local communities who have committed to reducing their single use plastics.
The first certificate has gone to Andy Taylor and his business GreenApe, of Bromsgrove, which hires its pedal powered smoothie bike to events across North Worcestershire.
Andy said: “I’m really proud to be the first recipient of a Plastic Pledge certificate. I’m always trying to do my bit to help look after the environment.
“With the nature of my business, I get through about 4,000 cups every summer, so it’s important for me to be able to say no to using plastic. There may be a small additional cost to businesses but it’s very easy to reduce the amount of single use plastic we all use.”
GreenApe takes its bike to local events, such as festivals, health and wellbeing events, schools, fairs and fetes around Redditch and Bromsgrove and further afield and it’s proved a hit with the local community.
As a county, more thanĀ 5,000 tonnes of plastic bottles and food containers were recycled last year, the equivalent of the weight of 37 blue whales.
