Council appeal to join spring clean campaign

Aaron Wise 20th Jan, 2017   0

VALE residents, clubs and organisations are being sought after to take part in Wychavon District Council’s ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ anti-littering campaign.

The major spring clean is part of a nationwide litter-picking event which takes place from Friday, March 3 to Sunday, March 5, with the idea to bring communities together to clear up litter that blights towns, villages and the surrounding countryside.

The council is supporting the campaign by providing litter-picking kits, which includes a litter grabber, gloves, a high visibility jacket and a number of blue bags in which to put the rubbish.

Coun Emma Stokes, district council portfolio holder for the environment and street scene, said: “Anyone who requests a kit will be sent a registration form together with some advice and information.

“Then when the litter-pick has taken place, we just need to know where the gathered waste is and we’ll make the arrangements to collect it.”

Coun Gerry O’Donnell, portfolio holder for community development, culture and sport, said: “The issue of littering is a national problem. That’s why as part of Evesham Town Council’s anti-litter group, we recently targeted a one-mile stretch of the River Avon path from Tesco to Hampton Ferry.

“In total we collected a staggering 33 bags of litter.

“If we want to attract and retain tourists to our towns and countryside, we must fight this culture of littering.”

Call the council on 01386 565018 for a litter-picking kit or visit www.wychavon.gov.uk/litter-picking for more details.
