'Conscientious' eco-warrior students working to keep their school clean

STUDENTS in Evesham have showcased their pride for the area by writing to Wychavon District Council to ask for litter pickers to help keep their school area clean.

The pupils from Demontfort School reached out to the council to ask for equipment to carry out litter picks, clearing rubbish and litter from the school grounds and local areas.

Eco-warriors at the school had just three litter pickers between the thirteen children in the group. The eco-leaders, pupils Jasmine and Evelyn, wrote a heart-felt letter on Facebook addressed to the council asking for more.

The children also invited the council to the school for a tour and to share some eco-tips with councillors.

After meeting with the eco leaders of the school, Cllr Emma Stokes, Executive Board Member for Resident and Customer Services, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to receive a hand-written letter from such enthusiastic, passionate, and conscientious students, and I was delighted to be able to help with some extra litter-pickers for the group.

“The council spends over £1.5million every year on street cleaning, including picking up rubbish – it’s always wonderful when young people care enough about the environment to do something about it.”

Wychavon has funded an education programme with Little Litter Warriors where more than 10,000 children have now joined the fight against litter.

Residents are also encouraged to take part in Wychavon’s Adopt a Street scheme and make a difference to our community.

Ruth Allen, headteacher at TDMS, said: “Some of our fantastic pupils decided to create and run their own eco club on Friday lunchtimes.

“It is great to see pupils of all ages taking care of our school site. We are extremely proud of what they have created and very thankful to Wychavon District Council for their support and donation of litter pickers.

“We are looking forward to our eco club growing and developing.”
