Community call to remember the fallen

Rob George 1st May, 2020   0

COMMUNITY chiefs at Pershore Abbey have called on local residents to help commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day next Friday (May 8).

Pershore Abbey has planned events including a concert and a service with local schools which have had to be cancelled along with national events due to the social distancing guidelines.

The organisers of VE75 are asking people undertake the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WW2’ at 3pm on May 8 from their own homes.

As well as supporting these, Pershore Abbey are asking people consider making their own union flag or decorate their houses as a mark of respect for all those who suffered or lost their lives during the Second World War. One member has already used the lockdown summer weather to paint a wall of Remembrance in her garden.

In conjunction with the Facebook group Pershore Rocks, the Abbey hopes to put on a display of poppy stones that have been painted by local artists to commemorate the event. This will hopefully be situated outdoors close to the Abbey for people to see on their daily exercise.

Revd Claire Lording said “We are mindful commemorations will have to be somewhat lower key due to the difficult times we are having to endure and with so many suffering as a consequence of this virus.

“However we need to try and have other things to work towards in order to keep morale up. This is an event that cannot pass by without being marked and this year more than any we should be able to identify with the Blitz spirit.

“We can’t celebrate together but we are fortunate enough for some of us to be able to keep in contact via our social media channels.’

To keep up to date with their activities, you can find Pershore Abbey Community on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
