College salutes students of year as Jade and Harry take the honours

A PAIR of Evesham students have proved to be top of the class after being named student of the year at their respective colleges.

Jade Sparrow, 19, has been studying a one-year Level 2 Hairdressing course and received the award in a ceremony celebrating the achievements of students of Evesham College.

Meanwhile, Harry Gouldburn, 17, who is studying Level 3 BTEC Sport, has won the top prize of Student of the Year in his first year at Pershore College.

Jade took up the profession to honour her grandmother’s legacy and also received the award for Hair and Beauty Commitment to Learning.

The caring teen has vowed to follow in the footsteps of her hairdresser grandmother who passed away a few months ago.

“She used to have people round to her house or work in a salon. I wanted to follow in her footsteps and become a hairdresser myself,” she said.

“I really enjoy cutting, blow-drying and washing people’s hair. The tutors have been really nice and friendly at the college. I’m hoping to do a Level 3 qualification next and then go to work in a salon after I have finished that.”

Head of department Sam Jocelyn-Sears said: “Jade has excelled herself.

“She has grown in confidence in both her theory and practical hairdressing, showing a commitment to hairdressing as a career path she truly wants to follow.”

Harry’s Level 3 BTEC Sport course is delivered in partnership with Leamington FC Academy, and gives footballers the chance to earn valuable qualifications and hone their skills on the pitch.

The right-back is planning to return for a second year – with plans to continue his studies at university after leaving.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after leaving school but knew sport was the path I wanted to follow,” he said. “I’ve had some amazing experiences so far. We have training sessions in the morning and then get to learn about coaching, research methods and other aspects of sport in the classroom.

Head of department Philippa Gerrard said: “Harry has progressed very well throughout his first year of the course.

“He consistently puts in the hard work and communicates well with staff in order to produce quality work that makes him stand out from his peers.
