Members of Evesham Rowing Club have taken action to protect and preserve their stretch of the River Avon, two weeks ahead of the town’s Evesham Regatta.
Armed with protective gear, litter pickers, and bags loaned by Wychavon District Council, volunteers took to the water in boats and kayaks and patrolled the riverbanks by foot, collecting large amounts of litter and debris as they went.
The dedicated effort over the Easter bank holiday weekend comes as the club prepares to welcome hundreds of rowing competitors, spectators and supporters to Abbey Meadows on May 3 and 4, for one of the area’s most anticipated annual sporting event.

“It’s vital we all play our part in protecting our waterways,” said club chairman Simon Edwards. “The River Avon is not only central to the sport we love, but it’s also home to an incredible variety of wildlife, from swans and geese to kingfishers and even otters.
“Keeping it clean and safe ensures everyone, from rowers to riverside walkers, families, and our local wildlife can safely enjoy the river for generations to come.”
The community clean-up brought together club members of all ages, reflecting Evesham Rowing Club’s commitment to environmental stewardship and playing an active part in the community.
By promoting sustainable enjoyment of the river, Evesham Rowing Club said it hopes to lead by example in caring for natural spaces that support both recreation and biodiversity.
“Evesham Regatta is set to be a major highlight of the May Day bank holiday weekend,” added Simon. “The event draws visitors from across the UK and it gives our town the chance to showcase not only our competitive rowing talent, but to showcase the beautiful area in which we live.”
