Club appeals for community support to ensure regatta success

Evesham Rowing Club is calling for the community’s support to ensure the success of this year’s regatta – an event which has been running for decades in the town.

Scheduled for the early May Bank Holiday weekend, the two-day spectacle attracts around 400 crews from across the UK, bringing a significant economic boost to the town with visitors filling Crown Meadow and Abbey Park.

However, the forced cancellation of last year’s regatta due to flooding, the impact of further floods over the winter and rising costs have combined to create a ‘perfect storm’ in the run up to this year’s event, placing financial strain on the club which founded in 1863.

Organiser Tony Rowland told the Observer the event needed more  ‘hands on deck’ to ensure that the Evesham Regatta is a success this year and continues to bring hundreds of people to the town.

“We invite people, organisations, and businesses to get involved in any way they can, whether through sponsorship, volunteering, or spreading the word – every bit of help counts.

“Businesses can support us by sponsoring the event and we have a range of options available. Sponsors will be invited for refreshments and lunch while enjoying the thrill of the racing out on the water from our VIP marquee and private riverside enclosure.

“Not only will you have a great day at the regatta, but your support will help keep one of England’s oldest rowing clubs going,” Tony said.

He added that as Evesham continues to expand with new housing, it was vital to maintain and improve the club’s facilities which includes the rowing club, tennis courts, squash and racquetball courts.

“In 2023, the club celebrated its 160th anniversary, which is a remarkable milestone. With the support of the town’s residents and local businesses, we hope to continue this legacy for another 160 years, supporting the physical health and wellbeing of local residents and boosting the town’s economy through events like the celebrated Evesham Regatta,” he added.

The Evesham Regatta which runs May 3 to 4 includes a 1,000m course for the main regatta and a 500m course for the sprint and showcases the talents of athletes young and old from Evesham’s junior to master sections.
