Clean up bid wins support of town chiefs

AN ANTI-LITTER group campaigning for clean streets has won the support of Mayor of Evesham, Coun Richard Jones, town MP Nigel Huddleston and numerous local councillors who joined volunteers for a day of litter picking.

Starting on Evesham High Street, the event saw 21 eager volunteers take to the streets and fill more than 40 large bags of litter as part of the national Great British Spring Clean project.

The Friends of Evesham group has been litter-picking in the town under the slogan ‘Because Evesham is too Lovely to Litter’ and aims to encourage members of the public as well as local businesses to keep the town clean.

Coun Colin Tether said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help clean up our streets. Evesham is a lovely place to live and work and we all need to band together to stop littering.”

The Friends of Evesham Anti-Litter Group is just one of the projects to come from the Evesham Town Plan, which aims to improve the lives of the 23,000 residents living in and around Evesham. Now in its third year, the Town Plan was implemented to protect Evesham’s heritage, whilst increasing the range of retail and food outlets in the centre, and improving the local environment – amongst many other action points.

Local businesses and residents are invited to celebrate the success of the town plan at #LoveEvesham on Saturday, April 14. Taking place between 10am and 2pm, the event will provide the opportunity for members of the local community to become involved in town plan projects, whilst showcasing independent businesses and offering an array of activities for children.

Coun Jones said: “The Town Plan is in place to benefit the people of Evesham, and its projects like the Friends of Evesham Anti-Litter Group successfully demonstrate its positive impact.

“It was fantastic to see so many volunteers give up part of their weekend to do their bit for the town; where the litter picking certainly made a real difference. Thank you to everyone who got involved.”

The anti-litter group will be continuing its fight against rubbish in the coming months and is encouraging local people to show their support. Anyone who would like to volunteer should contact Colin Tether: [email protected].
