Changes revealed to car parks in Evesham during Waitrose construction

COUNCIL chiefs have announced major changes to a town centre car park to help with parking demand during construction of the Waitrose store.

Proposals put forward by Wychavon District Council’s Executive Board includes converting Chapel Street Car Park from short stay to long stay from April 3.

This is to cope with the loss of the Old Brewery Car Park, set to close in mid-May, due to work beginning on the new Waitrose store.

The Old Brewery Car Park was set to close in April, but council chiefs have managed to keep it open for longer due to a reduction in the need for archaeological and ground investigations.

Changing Chapel Street into a long stay car park will see the current 30 minute and £2 for three hours tariffs brought to an end, and the normal long stay rates introduced.

The Executive Board will vote on the proposals at a meeting on Wednesday, February 8.

Coun Linda Robinson, Leader of Wychavon District Council, said: “Bringing Waitrose to Evesham will provide long term economic security for the town and confidence for other independent retailers to relocate here.

“We’re already seeing bars and restaurants opening or planning to open already which is great news.

“There may be short term disruption to parking as we build this store and this is why we have the recommendation to convert one of the existing short stay car parks into a  long stay to help with this.”
