VISITORS to a popular Middle Littleton animal sanctuary are being invited to meet some of the almost 600 animal residents when it opens its doors for its annual open day.
Caring volunteers at the Farm Animal Sanctuary, the UK’s oldest farm rescue centre, are getting set for the event next Sunday, September 2 from 1pm to 5pm.
During a packed afternoon of events visitors can meet some of the more than 580 animal residents and visit stalls selling crafts, food and gifts as well as hearing informative talks on animal welfare.
Among those being cared for at the sanctuary is Freda the pig who has been part of life at the centre for more than two years.
Previously she had been living in solitary confinement in the most appalling conditions on a run down patch of ground in Warwickshire.
She was wading up to her belly in slurry, her shelter was a piece of broken tin, she had no bedding and was fed mainly on household scraps. Most pigs are naturally curious animals who thrive on company, their own or human.
A sanctuary spokesperson said: “Freda is now a delightful, happy, forgiving sow who loves nothing better than sitting in the doorway of shelter watching the world go by, waiting for someone to give her a belly rub. She is in pig heaven.”
