Chance to apply for cash

UP TO £20,000 worth of grants are now on offer to schools, charities and community organisations to help support disadvantaged children and their families.

The Social Mobility Grant Scheme is aimed at Free School Meal (FSM) eligible children to provide positive activities and wraparound care services, as well as projects to improve pupil confidence and mental well-being.

Grants between £250 and £1,000 are available and successful applicants must ensure that the projects do not stigmatise or isolate individuals or groups of children or students.

Applications will be open until February 1 to schools, voluntary and community sector organisations, as well as early year settings. They can also be for small capital projects or revenue schemes.

According to the ‘State of the Nation 2017: Social Mobility in Great Britain’, Wychavon was ranked fifth worst for early years social mobility. To address this, the scheme was launched to help early year settings find new ways to help their hard-pressed families and children.

Coun Christopher Day, portfolio holder for Housing, Health and Wellbeing at Wychavon District Council, said: “The Social Mobility Grant Scheme is a great opportunity to help improve outcomes for FSM eligible children and their families, as well as close the gap between the most disadvantaged children and their peers.

“We are encouraging schools, early years settings, community organisations and others to apply.”
