PERSHORE residents are being invited to a ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

The Pershore and District Branch of The Royal British Legion is inviting the community to take part in its commemoration event at Pershore Abbey this Sunday (July 3).

The Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Lt Col Patrick Holcroft LVO OBE will be one of many in attendance to pay tribute to those who fought in the 1916 First World War battle, which was one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

The event is one of thousands taking place across the country by the nation’s biggest armed forces charity, who provide care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces and their families.

The Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch KCVO, head of remembrance at The Royal British Legion said: “This year we’re asking communities to host or take part in events to commemorate those who fell at the Battle of the Somme, which has come to symbolise the tragic scale and futility of modern industrialised warfare.

“Their sacrifice is as relevant today as ever, but in this centenary year we will pay special tribute to their service.”

The event will take place at 5pm.
