Caught by fellow driver

Evesham Editorial 26th Oct, 2019   0

DASH cam footage has been used by Wychavon for the first time to crackdown on people throwing rubbish from their vehicles.

Two pieces of cellophane cigarette wrapper were seen being tossed out of the passenger window of a car travelling along Saltway in Droitwich.

The incident, which happened at the end of July, was witnessed by another driver who contacted Wychavon and offered dash cam footage and a statement. The vehicle keeper was then asked to provide the details of who was responsible and a £75 fine was issued.C

Council chiefs have also taken advantage of a change in the law to increase the level of fine given to people caught littering to £150.

The first fine at the new level was issued in August when a member of Evesham Anti-Litter Group discovered litter on the verges of Greenhill. Evidence was found which led officers at Wychavon to an Evesham resident who admitted the offence.

Coun Emma Stokes, responsible for environment on Wychavon District Council, said: “It’s completely unacceptable people think it is okay to throw their rubbish out of their vehicle. By using new technology and a change in the law we are clamping down on those who act so anti-socially.

“What these cases also show is the importance of the public acting as our eyes and ears. If you see someone littering, whether on foot or from a vehicle, then please report it to us so we can take action.

“Together we can make our district an even cleaner and greener place to live.”
