Cash boost will help launch new project

A GROUND-BREAKING project to support the mental health of parents in Evesham will be launched after a £4,000 funding boost from Tesco’s Bags of Help community grant scheme

Springfield Mind has bagged the cash following the votes of shoppers at the town’s Worcester Road store over the last month which saw it compete for a share of the windfall from carrier bag sales with two other local causes.

Work will now begin on bringing the project – Positive Minds for Mums and Dads – to life at Wallace House Community Centre from next month.

Sally Ward, team leader of Springfield Mind, said: “Parents need and deserve emotional support to improve their own well-being and in turn that of their children. Parenting can be tough and Springfield Mind is so grateful that with this money they can run a parent to parent support group to help enable families to thrive in our community.”

Bags of Help is run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork and sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, it’s provided more than £48million to more than 13,000 local community projects.

Voting ran in stores throughout January and February with customers choosing which local project they would like to get the top award using a token given to them at the checkout.

Lindsay Road, Community Champion at Evesham Tesco, said: “Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers. It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community.
