Campaingers call for more funding for NHS during Evesham rally

CAMPAIGNERS, activists and concerned residents from across Evesham hit the town streets on Saturday to call for more funding for the NHS and for an end to the selling off of services to private companies.

More than 40 people marched through Evesham to the town’s Community Hospital in support of nationwide rallies including a major demonstration in the heart of London.

It’s Our NHS Worcestershire (IONHSW), a group of campaigners made up of political parties, trade unions, campaign groups and individuals organised rallies across the county as part of a national day of action by Health Campaigns Together and People’s Assembly Against Austerity.

The demonstration in Evesham was put together by the cross-party Keep our NHS Public group and saw several speakers from various organisations give rousing addresses to the crowd.

A number of passing motorists also sounded their support by honking their horns as they passed the march.

One of the campaigners involved, Mary Campbell, said: “It is time to step up our dissatisfaction with the way the NHS is being slowly depleted daily. Evesham Community Hospital has lost many of its services, the latest being the Breast Clinic.

“These losses are made quite secretly and not the subject of public consultation. In fact no public notice is given.”

Anyone who wishes to lend their support to the campaign can e-mail Mary on [email protected] for more.
