Calls for action as Evesham's riverside residents blighted by criminal activity

ONGOING anti-social behaviour and drug-related activity along the riverside parks in Evesham has residents fearful for their safety.

A couple living in Monks Walk, who wish not to be named, have contacted the Observer to share details of criminal behaviour including cruelty to wildlife and drug dealing being witnessed by residents on a daily basis.

“The safety and wellbeing of [our] family and neighbours are at serious risk, and the failure to respond appropriately has left us feeling ignored and vulnerable,” the anonymous source told the Observer.

“The level of [criminal] activity in the area has become intolerable and continues to escalate.”

Reports of a homeowner’s patio window being cracked by what was believed to be a BB gun bullet on July 17 have led to further concerns in the area. The suspected BB bullet led to a considerable crack in the glazing.

West Mercia Police have called into question the nature of the incident. Despite the homeowners claiming they were told by a PCSO on July 19 that the damage was caused by such a weapon, the force say they did not treat the event as a firearms incident but instead as criminal damage. The investigation has since been closed due to ‘insufficient evidential opportunities’.

Our anonymous source said despite multiple police reports being filed by them and other residents over the past three years, they do not feel concerns are being taken seriously. They are demanding immediate action and have been told CCTV in situ is currently blocked by trees, making identifying individuals difficult.

“This is a daily occurrence, and the fear amongst residents is growing. It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or worse if this situation is not addressed with urgency,” added the anonymous source.

Now the school holidays have started, residents fear the situation will get worse. It comes as police are investigating reports of waterfowl being shot and injured by teenagers with a catapult on Tuesday (July 22).

Police attended the incident and wish to speak to anyone who may have information about a boy wearing a neon pink t-shirt seen in the area of Bridge Street and Abbey Park.

A spokesperson for the force said they are continuing to investigate and review CCTV footage from the area. They will also be carrying out additional patrols in the vicinity.

Inspector David Wise said:  “We are aware of sporadic reports of ASB in the busy recreational area of Monks Walk, which is a thoroughfare to Evesham Town Centre.

“We patrol regularly and have worked hard to increase police visibility and take a preventative approach with partner agencies.

“I would ask residents to continue to report issues as and when they are happening, which will give us the best chance to tackle issues and pursue offenders.

“A further visit to residents at Monks Walk will take place this afternoon.”
