VALE MPs Harriett Baldwin and Nigel Huddleston have called for the new Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson to deliver a ‘sucessful’ Brexit after the controversial politician was gifted the keys to Number 10.
Mr Johnson became leader with 66 per cent of the vote on Tuesday and was asked to form a new Government by HM the Queen the following day.
The new Prime Minister was almost instantly rebuked after revealing part of his conversation with Her Majesty, breaking a protocol which states conversations between the monarch and Prime Minister remain private.
Mr Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt comfortably, winning 92,153 votes to his rival’s 46,656 and promised he would ‘deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn’.
Mrs Baldwin, a passionate supporter of Mr Johnson’s rival Jeremy Hunt, said: “It is now crucial the Conservative party unite behind the Prime Minister, deliver a successful Brexit and that we continue with the policies that have led to a strong economy, record employment, record funding for the NHS and schools.
“We must ensure at the next General Election we defeat the dreadful duo of Corbyn and McDonnell, who would put our country back decades.”
Speaking after Mr Johnson’s appointment, Mr Huddleston said: “Boris Johnson presented a positive vision for the UK’s domestic agenda and I look forward to helping him deliver on the commitments he made during the campaign to further improve our vital public services.
“The next few months will be an important time for our country as the new Government renegotiates our future relationship with the European Union.”
“For my part, I will do all that I can to support Mr Johnson’s efforts to ensure that we deliver on the referendum result and leave the EU as quickly, and as orderly, as possible.”
