MONSTEROUS marrows and perfect pears were just some of the carefully grown specimens on display at Bretforton Show last Saturday (September 13).
A thousand people dodged a deluge to enjoy a traditional village affair held in the historic grounds of Bretforton Manor which featured pony rides, face painting and cream teas.
Entertainment by Bretforton Silver Band provided a musical backdrop to the jolly afternoon which raised around £3,000 for a number of Worcestershire charities, including St Richard’s Hospice.
Visitors enjoyed viewing the colourful exhibits in the show tent which included a magnificent display of floral art, sweet & savoury preserves alongside a range of bakes including Victoria sponge.
Even the British inclement weather enhanced the atmosphere.
“We were really pleased with how it went given that the weather was uncertain and we had a big downpour in the middle but it didn’t seem to spoil anyone’s enjoyment.
“In fact, we had reports that it enhanced community spirit as everyone had to cram into the exhibition tent and cider barn, talking to each other,” said show chair Kate Buckham.
Outstanding winner on the day was greenfingered Ben Harrison who came away with three trophies winning best exhibit in fruit and vegetable section, most points in the fruit and vegetables section and exhibitor with most overall points in show.
Ann Gumbley-Williams was a double winner having scooped the Bretforton Parish Council trophy for best exhibit in the floral art section and the JE & JS James Shield for most points in the flowers section.
Amy Jelfs, who sold her locally-grown fruits to raise funds for Bretforton Proms, said: “It’s great to have such an interesting and diverse show and village, and we are lucky to hold it in the wonderful setting like manor thanks to the Ansteys and the organisers who all work so hard.”
“I always knew that Bretforton was an incredibly special village, but attending the show for the first time in the manor’s beautiful garden illustrated quite how special it is.
“Bretforton Grange & Theatrebarn is so proud to be one of the village’s assets and we can’t wait to play an even bigger part in the lives of the community,” added director Dafydd Rogers.
