EAGLE-EYED Bretforton bird lovers sprang into action when they spotted an abandoned cockerel roaming the quiet residential streets.
Caring residents spotted the animal on a quiet weekday afternoon and came together to deliver the adventurous bird to a sanctuary in Atch Lench.
Former councillor Matt Snape was among those who made the discovery and told the Observer it was the last thing he expected to see on a quiet Tuesday afternoon.
“The cockerel had been noticed by quite a few residents. My first thought was to contact 111 and they advised me to phone the RSPCA,” he said.
“However, I knocked on the door of a local resident who loves animals as she has a small farm herself, and she alongside another neighbour of mine, helped corner the bird and put it into a box.”
The caring trio ensured the bird was fed and was then driven to the sanctuary some 10 miles away.
“The last thing I expected on a Tuesday afternoon was to find a cockerel on my drive, but thanks to one local resident and one of my neighbours, we managed to ensure the animal was safely placed into a box and fed,” Mr Snape added.
“I am glad a hen sanctuary in Atch Lench is looking after the bird now, but it is truly despicable someone would do this to a bird once it is deemed useless
“The person who did this should be ashamed of themselves. I don’t know how they sleep at night.”
