A FAMILY from Broom has turned heartbreak into hope by fundraising to purchase medical equipment in memory of their daughter, Autumn Rose Cooper.
Autumn was born with Edwards syndrome and defied all expectations to give her mum, dad and big sister Robyn 16 unforgettable months, during which she was admitted to Riverbank Children’s Ward at Worcestershire Royal Hospital six times.
Each admission relied on AIRVO2 technology, which played a vital role in stabilising Autumn and giving her family precious extra time together.
Because, however, the equipment was not portable, consultants often had to visit the family instead, with some appointments cancelled altogether.
Even on Autumn’s final journey home to the village near Bidford, the limitations of the equipment meant an urgent set up in the ambulance, followed by a dash from the ward to reconnect her for the journey.
When parents Phil and Sam learnt that newer, portable AIRVO3 machines were available, they decided to honour Autumn’s legacy by helping other families avoid similar challenges.
They set themselves an ambitious target of raising £18,500 to purchase two portable AIVO3 machines for the ward – equipment that will make an invaluable difference to families facing similar challenges.
Thanks to a generous grant from Daisychain Benevolent Fund Trust, and their fundraising two machines have now been purchased.
Returning to see the equipment in action earlier this month, Phil said: “It means a lot to see the machines in use and know that Autumn’s journey will inspire other families to never give up hope.”
The family also shared their appreciation for the care they received: “We want to express our heartfelt thanks to all the staff on Riverbank, and from Orchard Service, who looked after Autumn during every admission. They helped us create priceless memories we will cherish forever.”
Although the machines are now in place, the Coopers are determined to continue fundraising to reach their full target of £18,500, to buy additional equipment for children’s services at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
Laura Gregory, community and events fundraising officer for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity, said: “We are delighted to support Phil, Sam and Robyn in their incredible fundraising efforts in memory of their beautiful daughter and sister Autumn.
“With the support of Daisychain Benevolent Fund Trust and the family’s dedication, we are proud to help provide enhanced equipment for our children’s services.”
