Bethan's the star after qualifying for national charity competition

AN EVESHAM college student who overcame severe congenital heart problems has qualified for the finals of a national charity’s competition.

Bethan Edwards of Celandine Way rode her horse, Sunny, in the regional heats of the Riding for the Disabled competition held in Wiltshire, representing RDA Cheltenham.

Bethan achieved the top score in her dressage competition, which consisted of many riders from all over the south west of England.

She now goes forward to compete at the national finals to be held at Hartpury College in July.

It’s a far cry from when Bethan spent the first four months of her life at Birmingham Children’s Hospital undergoing multiple open-heart surgeries to help her cope with her condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

The condition means that Bethan literally has ‘only half a heart, as the left side is not formed.

She is now in her third year at Pershore College and has a passion for small animals and horses.
