A YOUNG man caught firing shots from a BB gun in a quiet Evesham cul-de-sac has been given a 12-week jail-term.

Police received reports of someone discharging a small handgun in Summerfield Gardens on June 22 about 12midday.

Officers attended the scene and Aaron Saunders, of Woodmancote in Worcester, approached them and immediately admitted

he was using the imitation firearm.

The 20-year-old, who was serving a suspended sentence for a charge of common assault, was seen shouting up to a flat in the area before he fired the weapon in the air four times, Worcester Magistrates Court heard last Friday (July 11).

The witness, who had just come back from the shops, was nervous about what might happen and called the police, who found a Dave Wesson silver revolver and a black colt handgun, the court also heard.

Sam Lamsdale, defending solicitor, said: “He and a neighbour had got into a habit of shooting BB guns in their gardens.

“They were trying to out-do each other in terms of loudness and both tried to adapt their weapons.

“On this occasion he stepped outside the door saying “listen to this”, he shot it four times and went back to the flat, he didn’t point the weapon at anybody and he didn’t make any threats.

“When officers arrived he immediately went out and said he thought they were looking for him, rather than creating a large scale search.

“He showed remorse for his actions and realised the recklessness of his behaviour.”

Saunders was handed the suspended sentence in January and District Judge Nigel Cadbury deemed his latest offence

serious enough to activate it.

District Judge Cadbury added: “This is a serious matter that I have to consider and you were subject to a suspended sentence when you started discharging this gun to be as noisy as you could make it.

“For the people watching they would think this was a real gun.

“A woman has immediately left the area and called the police. This is more than stupidity is was extremely reckless without any thought of how it would affect other people.”
