Baroness to help relaunch branch

Evesham Editorial 11th Jan, 2018   0

A HIGH-PROFILE Liberal Democrat will be on hand to celebrate the relaunch of its Evesham branch at Wallace House Community Centre.

Baroness Lorely Burt will be keynote speaker at the meeting on Thursday at the Oat Street venue from 7.15pm.

The former Solihull MP made the headlines in 2005 when she sensationally won the Solihull seat for the party.

Baroness Burt succeeded in overturning incumbent John Taylor’s 9,407 majority to a 279 majority in her favour, one of only three seats lost by the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats that year.

She was the first female Chair of the Liberal Democrats’ Parliamentary Party and held the seat for 10 years, up until the 2015 election.

Following her defeat, she was awarded a life peerage and continues to serve the party from the House of Lords.

Her keynote speech ‘A Liberal Britain’ will explore the development of policy for the party in these difficult times, offering an alternative vision for Britain.

After her speech, there will be opportunity for questions, discussion and refreshments.

Mid Worcestershire Lib Dem chair Margaret Rowley said: “We want to offer our Evesham LibDem members and local residents greater opportunity to meet and to discuss issues that matter to them.

“This can then be a platform for action on local issues like housing, roads and local amenities to make Evesham a better place in which to live and work.
