MORRIS dancing, traditional folk music and famous names were all on the menu for part of the official launch for this year’s British Asparagus Festival.
The first-ever official National Asparagus Day, marking the start of the Asparagus season, kicked off on Monday with the first-cut round of gras being celebrated and revered.
As well as being blessed, morris dancers will be on hand to welcome the famous asparagus which has been recognised by the European Union by being awarded geographical protected food status.
Joining the crowds on Monday was Gus the Asparagus Man, Jemima Packington, the world’s only fortune teller who uses asparagus to ply her trade, and the AsparaFairy.
The ‘100’ round of asparagus was regally driven by a fleet of vintage cars to the newly-opened Broadway Station where it was be taken by steam train to Cheltenham Racecourse Station to be auctioned to raise money for Cotswold Riding for The Disabled.
