Arts project launched to help residents shed the pounds

A GROUND-BREAKING 10 week art project is launching in Evesham in a bid to help residents find creative ways to lose weight.

The new project launches this Thursday at Wallace House Community Centre and anyone who wants to lose weight, but lacks the confidence or self-esteem to do so, is invited to take part.

Wychavon District Council is running the project after a number of studies found the arts can be used as a tool to improve well-being and help people lose weight.

The latest Creative Health Inquiry Report, published by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing, found a study done on arts activities in the community demonstrated 82 per cent of people enjoyed greater well being as a result.

Council chiefs are hoping their project can replicate this in the Vale by improving participants confidence and self-esteem which will in turn support them to go on to make lifestyle changes to lose or maintain their weight.

The first session will feature creative writing and the visual arts. The group will then get a chance to choose which art form they would like to continue with over the following nine weeks.

Jenny Davis Arts Development Officer at Wychavon said: “It’s brilliant that we are running this groundbreaking project where art is being used to help boost people’s confidence.
