Appeal for historic Evesham church's missing wall hanging

AN APPEAL has been put out for help in finding a wall hanging that went missing from a town centre Evesham church a few years ago.

The decorative item went missing from the historic St Lawrence’s some time in the last decade before the Covid-19 pandemic.

It depicts an ancient passageway used by monks to access the 16th Century St Clement Chapel from Evesham Abbey and used to hang on the wall where the monks would have entered.

The church has been in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust since 1979 and has since undergone restoration and repairs.

The trust’s local community officer Tracy Genever said: “We can’t imagine that it is of use to anyone but it’s a beautiful way for our volunteers to show visitors where the passageway once was.

“I don’t see that it would be of any value to anyone. We’d just love to see it back in place. It’s of educational value to our visitors.”

She is also seeking volunteers who can spare a couple of hours a week to join the team at St Lawrence’s to help with history tours or supporting other events.

It is currently only open by appointment but the plan is to open everyday during summer months.

“We need more volunteers to open the doors and welcome visitors so more people can appreciate it, “ Tracy added.

The building is noted for for a beautiful vaulted ceiling built in the 1500s and significant stained glass windows.

Anyone with any knowledge of the hanging’s whereabouts or wanting to join the volunteering team should email Tracy via [email protected].
