A LOOK behind the scenes of one of the busiest animal rescue centres in the UK is on the cards this weekend with the Vale Wildlife Hospital’s annual open day.
This Sunday (July 6), the 41-year-old charity based at Beckford will hold its biggest fundraiser of the year from 11am to 4pm with lots to entertain young, old, and four-legged friends.
As well as a fascinating opportunity to understand the hospital’s day-to-day work, there is also plenty of family entertainment on the schedule, including a fun dog show (12noon start), food stalls, traders, raffle, face painting, live music, and dog demonstration and dance group.
Classes for the dog show include the best rescue, waggiest tail, most gorgeous girl and handsome boy.
It is the one time of year when the public is invited to see beyond the main reception, as normally, its animal patients are nurtured back to health with minimal disturbance from humans.
July is one of the busiest months of the year for the organisation, which was founded by Caroline Gould 41 years ago. It is currently admitting more than 70 casualties every day and accepts injured wildlife brought in by members of the public from 7am to 10pm seven days a week.
It’s an expensive business, however, and monthly running costs have now reached £75k. The charity is completely reliant on public support to do its vital work, helping to save Britain’s declining mammal and bird species.
The event runs from 11am to 4pm and costs £5 per adult, under 10s are free.
As reported earlier this week, it is currently in dispute with energy provider British Gas over VAT exemption.
