Ambitious application for new pedestrian bridge linking Evesham and Hampton

Evesham Editorial 18th Mar, 2024   0

AN APPLICATION for a new walking and cycling bridge, over the River Avon, to link Hampton and Evesham town centre is set to be decided upon.

Worcestershire County Council’s planning and regulatory committee will made a decision on the proposals tomorrow (Tuesday, March 19).

Currently, pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Hampton and the town centre must navigate the busy B4084 Pershore Road and cross the Abbey Bridge, which is heavily trafficked.

This situation often leads to people opting to travel by car instead. Hampton Bridge will be funded through several sources including contributions from housing developers.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member for economy, infrastructure and skills, said: “This bridge would be a huge step forward in our commitment to improving walking and cycling infrastructure provision in Evesham.

“If the application is approved it will give the green light to progress the bridge, providing more travel options for residents as well as enabling them to keep fit and active.”

This application follows an extensive pre-planning public engagement exercise, which took place late in 2021. If given the go ahead, some initial works would get underway later this year with most of the work taking place in 2025/26.

Coun Bayliss added: “We have already delivered a number of schemes to improve walking and cycling routes across Worcestershire, including a number of improvements in and around Bromsgrove, the opening of Broomhall Way, Crookbarrow Way and Hams Way footbridges in Worcester, and more recently, started the construction of Kepax Bridge in the centre of Worcester.”
