Almonry event is chance to pay respects

Evesham Editorial 19th Jul, 2018   0

VALE residents are being invited to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice during an event at the town’s Almonry.

The historic venue will remember the men and women of Evesham who fought in the Great War when its summer exhibition ‘World War One Remembered’ opens this Saturday.

Running until November, the event will tell the stories of local men and women who served during the war.

The exhibition will feature soldiers such as Pvt Frederick Grinnell who lived on Bewdley Street and died in Basra leaving behind his pregnant wife and young son. It will also showcase the work of Florence Haynes Rudge and the nurses from Abbey Manor hospital as well as other VAD volunteers in the town.

The exhibition will be added to throughout the summer culminating in a display that will cover both the First and Second World Wars in time for Remembrance Sunday. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to remember their own family and friends who have served in any war.

Staff at the Almonry are inviting visitors to fill in a ‘Remember Me’ card and add it to their Tree of Remembrance. On November 11, the Almonry will be lighting a light for each person named as a memorial to those who sacrificed themselves.

There will be different events and activities over the summer with the Discover History team in attendance at tomorrow’s event.

Town residents young and old can meet a First World War soldier and nurse who will share tales about life during the conflict. There will also be children’s trail and craft activities running everyday throughout the summer.

The exhibition will be launched at 10.30am and is free to enter. Children’s activities will be £1
