Aiming for a tide of vital cash at popular duck race

A CALL has gone out to residents go ‘quackers’ and support this year’s annual duck race on the River Avon in aid of the popular Pershore Carnival.

The popular fund-raiser will take place next Sunday (April 14) on the river during a packed afternoon of celebrations on King George’s Field in the heart of the town.

A total of 1,000 plastic ducks will make a splash on the river bidding to be the first over the line to secure their owners cash prizes.

It’s the latest fund-raiser for the carnival which takes place on Spring Bank Holiday Monday (May 27) and which this year has the theme of ‘Fairytales’.

“It’s quite a sight, 1,000 yellow plastic ducks racing down the River Avon with everyone shouting their duck numbers, it’s fantastic” said Colin Shepherd, chairman of Pershore Carnival.

The event takes place on the River Avon from King Georges Field and there will be refreshments and other activities in the Riverside Centre, with a bouncy castle and further activities at the riverside.

“We rely on our fund-raising efforts and donations to be able to make Carnival happen so I would urge you all to join in the fun. It really is going to be another quack-tastic day,” he added.

Tickets are £2 per duck with cash prizes for the first three finishers in each race.

Tickets are on sale in TC Fireplaces, Qualitype and Upper Crust and committee members will also be selling tickets in town tomorrow (Saturday) and next Saturday (April 13).

Visitors on the day will be able to buy tickets until the end of the first race at 2pm.

Before the fun on the river kicks off this year’s carnival King and Queen, Prince and Princesses will be chosen to the lead the procession through the streets of the town on the big day.

The competition is open to all youngsters living in the town and the candidates will be judged from 1pm next Sunday (April 14) at the Riverside Centre.
