A46 collisions spark a review

Evesham Editorial 23rd Dec, 2021   0

CAMPAIGNERS have welcomed a review of the speed limits along a section of the busy A46 as the road saw yet another accident.

National Highways confirmed the stretch through Evesham in particular would be examined following a series of accidents including the death of a man last month.

The driver of a Nissan Qashqai died following a collision between a car and a lorry between the junction with Cheltenham Road and Aston Somerville on November 10.

Closures were again needed between the A435 near Teddington and the A4184 near Hinton Cross on Friday (December 17) following another serious collision.

National Highways has confirmed it is working with local police who are investigating two fatal accidents at Hinton Cross and are looking at implementing extra speed restrictions along the main road.

A host of online petitions calling for speed limits to be reviewed on the road have been launched and campaigners have also won the support of local MPs Harriett Baldwin, Nigel Huddleston and Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson.

The trio have written to National Highways to share their concerns about the road and Mrs Baldwin met with campaigners last week to visit the busy road and urged them to share local knowledge of the road.

“I welcome this positive response from National Highways, who ultimately are responsible for this road and therefore the safety of my constituents,” Mrs Baldwin said.

“I support the consideration of speed limits, but this must come with enforcement to make sure drivers adhere to the rules.

“Anyone who uses this road knows that it is busy, and there is a long-term plan to improve the whole stretch of the A46, but until that plan is developed, road safety must be the top priority.

“I understand that National Highways is now waiting for the result of the formal police investigations, but this is something that I plan to keep a close eye on in the New Year.”
